People are becoming more and more aware about the harmful effects of UV radiation and with many scientists predicting that the thinning of the Ozone layer is going to continue, it is important to protect yourself (and especially your children) from these effects.

Window tint blocks most of the harmful UV rays coming in through your car windows and will help to protect you and your passengers from the sun.

During the sunny weather recently you may have noticed how hot your car is when you get into it, even if you’d only left it for a few minutes – window tint also helps keep your car cool.

Modifying your Exhaust

So your vehicle is looking fantastic; you’ve fully tinted all your windows, the new body kit looks amazing and you’ve really transformed your motor into something special. It looks great, it feels great but…it doesn’t quite sound great. What you need is a new exhaust.

Why modify my exhaust?
First things first, a new stainless steel exhaust will sound great and your car will start turning heads like you want it to. A new exhaust system can also improve your cars performance in terms of BHP. If you shop around well, you can find exhausts that also improve your fuel economy which could potentially move you into a lower vehicle tax bracket.

If you’re looking at modifying your car to sell on, a new exhaust could potentially add a lot of value to your car. Most motor enthusiasts, particularly if you’re selling on prestige or classic cars, will look for a faithfully reproduced exhaust.  Plus, the improved performance ought to be a selling point too.

What sort of exhaust will I need?
This will entirely depend on the type of car you drive and what you want out of it. New tails might improve the sound of your car and how it looks, but a full exhaust system is more likely to improve performance. Obviously, different models need different specifications and you should research exactly what you want before buying.

An exhaust modification can be a great addition to any car, whether it’s a performance sports car, a one off classic or just your prized possession. It may well improve your car’s performance, increase your fuel economy, saving you money, and it will more than likely increase the resale value of your car. If your motor looks great, make sure it sounds great too!

Car Modifications – A Need for Speed?

In the eyes of the insurer, modifying your car or its performance shows an intent to drive faster and possibly more recklessly hence the reason why it effects your car insurance premium so drastically. However for the car enthusiast, modifying their latest set of wheels, or tinting their windows can be either a hobby or their business. Some will only want to give the car a more luxurious or sporty look, whilst other will tune the engine up, add parts and generally spruce the vehicle up to increase its value to sell on.

The popular MTV show ‘Pimp my Ride’ featured rapper Xzibit taking one car in poor condition and restoring it, as well as customizing it. Young drivers from in and around Los Angeles would have their car tailored to their own specifications and interests at no cost to themselves. Window tint, disco balls, flat screen TV’s, games consoles and even an electric fire were installed in the owners cars. What the show failed to show, was that the owner of the newly customisable car was probably unable to drive the car at all, as no insurance company would insure them.

That is the very real prospect that many car enthusiasts face. Once they have modified and customised their car, and maybe fitted window tint, they are unable to drive their dream car as the cost to insure is just too much. Cheap modified car insurance can be hard to come by as many insurers link it to the ‘Boy Racer’ culture. The AA reported a 51% rise in insurance premiums for young drivers, and price comparison website Moneysupermarket showed an average premium for a 17 – 22 year old male driver is around £2500. It is these figures that are making young drivers think twice about modifying their car.

What constitutes a modification?

The definition of a modified car is one which has been altered in any way from its original factory set-up. Not all modifications will affect your car insurance premium, and different insurance companies will have different views on what constitutes modification.

Generally speaking, anything which increases the value of the car or enhances its performance is a modification. Before you make any modifications to your car, it is always best to contact your insurer first to see how much it will cost you. If the cost of your annual premium rises too much, it may not be worth it in the long run.

However there are those whose needs for a DIY ‘fix’ is too great. Therefore for those, consider these top tips, to keep the cost down.

First of all, shop around as it may be best to find a specialist modified car insurance company. As well as potentially offering cheaper modified car insurance, these providers often will offer extras like track day cover and bonuses if you are a member of an owners’ club.

Specialist modified car insurers can also offer an ‘agreed valuation’ on your car. This will guarantee you a certain payout, giving you the peace of mind that you will get what your car is worth, rather than the trade value which will be a lot less.

Fit a security device approved by your insurer, like an immobiliser, an alarm or a steering wheel lock and park your car in a secure location like a garage or driveway. If you have expensive alloy wheels on your car, you might want to invest in locking wheel nuts which will reduce the risk of them being stolen.

Finally, drive safely and responsibly. Even if your newly modified car can do 60mph in two seconds, getting a speeding offence will more than likely double your annual premium.

Top 5 ways to modify your car

So you’ve bought your new (or not so new) car, and it’s time to start thinking about adding some styling and modifications. We’ve put together a list of our favourite car modifications to give you a bit of inspiration.

1.  Window Tint

Now I’m not just putting window tint at the top of the list because we’re the leading UK supplier of pre cut car window tint kits (end shameless plug), I do truly believe that it is one of the cheapest and best ways to completely transform your car. It looks good on any car, from a Fiesta to a Ferrari, and you can buy DIY tint kits for around £30. Make your car really stand out by going for a mirrored or coloured tint.

2. Alloy wheels

Have you ever seen a decent modified car running on standard steel wheels? No, I didn’t think so, and that’s why I’ve put alloy wheels 2nd in our list. You’re going to have to cut down on the takeaways for a few months though as alloy wheels (and the tyres you’ll need on them) don’t come cheap. Expect to pay anywhere upwards of £300 for a basic set. If you can’t quite afford that, car wheel trims are a decent alternative and only a fraction of the price.

3. Exhaust

You’ve got your car looking nice, but you can’t have it sounding like a shopping trolley. So next on our list is a new exhaust. These range from just a back-box to give your car a bit of a roar, to a complete exhaust system to increase performance and give your car that sporty sound. Prices for back-boxes start at around £50.

4. Lexus lights

It seemed at one point that every other car you passed had a set of Lexus lights fitted, looking pretty tacky in some cases. Together with other modifications I think they can definitely look nice, I personally prefer the Lexus lights with a darker backing (see image below) rather than the silver backed lights with looked a bit stuck on. Something else you could try if you don’t want to fork out on a new set of lights is some tail light tinting spray; you’ll definitely get a more unique look.

5. Painted brake callipers

I drive a Skoda Octavia VRS, and one of the things I still like the most about it is its green brake callipers (is that sad?). This will only work if you’ve got a set of wide spoke alloys, but it will give your car that definite sporty look. Brake calliper paint is available as either a spray can or a pot of paint. You’ll probably need to take your wheels off to apply it.

Double Rainbow – What does it mean?

After watching YouTube-sensation Double Rainbow guy pondering the meaning of a double rainbow, naturally the first thing that came to my mind was window tint. More specifically – I wonder what rainbow wint tint would look like. It’s not something I’ve come accross before, so I turned to Google and found the below – I think I’ll stick to black.
